Signifying Monkeys is intended to document my experiences and discoveries as a graduate student of Literary Studies. My primary focus includes 19th Century African American Women, with a particular interest in the work of Alice Moore Dunbar Nelson, Southern Women Writers, Modern American Literature, and the Harlem Renaissance.

As a side item, I am also interested in the antebellum history of St. Louis, but more specifically, St. Louis’ black middle-class during this time. There is a significant little book published in 1858 which documents a few of these families called, The Colored Aristocracy of St. Louis written by Cyprian Claymorgan. I am fascinated by the historical connections between the cities of St. Louis and New Orleans, as they were deemed sister cities during the time of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, when St. Louis was considered the capital of Upper Louisiana.

I encourage critical, meaningful comments with regard to the literature and literary subjects discussed here.
